Holiday Breaks and Childhood Disabilities Parents of children with disabilities may struggle more than their mainstream peers to plan activities, schedule play dates or find childcare when school is not in session during holidays. Changes in sleep schedules and differences in daily routines can be challenging for both parents and children. Person First Language and Down Syndrome Parents of young children with Down syndrome may feel passionately about how they refer to their sons and daughters. Some advocate Person First Language and some feel that Down syndrome should be kept as a focus of their advocacy. New Down Syndrome Prenatal Testing Information There are now 2 pamphlets available for expectant parents and medical professionals addressing the non-invasive prenatal tests for Down syndrome. Questions have been raised about factual inaccuracies and unbalanced information in the newer pamphlet available from national Down syndrome organizations Down Syndrome and Heart Issues Children with Down syndrome have a higher incidence of heart problems and some babies require surgery within the first year of life. Due to the great strides in surgical techniques and medical support, children's heart issues can be resolved with a quicker recovery than seems possible to families. Family Thanksgivings - Childhood Disabilities Thanksgiving for families of children with disabilities is a lovely time to celebrate opportunities our sons and daughters find growing up appreciated and included in our neighborhoods and schools, especially if a chid has been injured, has a medical condition, or has a developmental disability. Military Families and Childhood Disabilities There are many challenges faced by military families raising children with disabilities, chronic health conditions, or other special needs. Common problems are frequent moves; IEPs that do not transfer; lengthy or closed waiting lists; insurance coverage rules; and military-related difficulties. Tenderness and Childhood Disabilities The diversity in development of children born with the same diagnosis may be even greater than the differences among mainstream children. Differences in early development do not predict the true potential of an individual. Every opportunity for support and encouragement should be given each child. Those who establish themselves via a blog, other social media or website may be both admired and highly criticized.
