History of Auslan - Australian Sign Language
Deaf Communities were formed as a result of adversity and alienation – a necessity for a group of people who were branded with a stigma who were ostracised and isolated from the world into which they were born. It was from this that their rich language was developed.

History of Hearing Aids
We know that there have been deaf people throughout history. In fact, because communication was so difficult these people were denied some of the basic human rights. What kinds of aids were available before technology gave us the aids we know today?

How a cochlear implant works
Recently I was asked how a Cochlear Implant works. First of all if you understand how normal hearing works it might help you to understand how the cochlear implant works. (I'm not a doctor nor an audiologist, simply an implantee! so this is not a medical treatise!)

How Deaf is Deaf?
It is different for everyone and does depend on what the cause of deafness is, but Deaf/deafened can be totally deaf and get no sound at all, or may still get some very loud sound, in just a few frequencies or it could be distorted.

How Definitions affect us
"Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me". I know it’s intended to teach children not to listen, to take the sting out of someone calling them names, but we all know that names stigmatise and never more those who have some kind of disability or difference.

How do voices sound with a Cochlear implant?
“Do the voices sound like a robot, or are they just as how people that are not deaf hear them?” That’s a really good question one that I think is asked frequently and the answer is misunderstood so I will try to explain.

How do we cope with being deaf?
When someone like me goes slowly deaf (over about 15 years) we slowly adapt and make changes that help us to interpret the hearing world.

How do you choose a Cochlea Implant brand?
Which brand will work best for me? How do I make that choice? Choosing a cochlear implant brand is not quite the same as choosing a brand for a new car?
