Parent Trigger Laws
The existence of parent trigger laws are seen by many as a positive alternative for parents who feel that promised school reform takes too long. A closer look makes one wonder just whom these laws are intended to benefit.

Parental Rights Have Limits
Tax-supported public schools exist to provide a basic education to the largest number of children. Governments support them in the national interest because an uneducated populace is unproductive and ungovernable. They can't cater to every parental desire or belief.

Parents and Popular Culture
Most cultural attitudes go unquestioned. Many attitudes held by Americans do not promote the idea of academic excellence in either parents or children.

Parents in the Classroom
Should parents have the option of sitting in on lessons in the public school classroom?

Politicians and Education
Efforts to improve the academic quality of U.S. public schools continue to fail because legislation that ties everything to standardized test scores and makes scapegoats of teachers is totally out of touch with the reality of U.S. culture.

Poor Reading Instruction Perpetuates Poverty
Itís no accident that the greatest percentage of illiteracy is to be found in the poorest segments of our population. The cause is related to a method of beginning reading instruction that penalizes the children of the poor.

Procrustean School Reform
Admirable in theory, the Common Core State Standards force regulations on schools regardless of a local district's ability to fulfill them.

Professional Educational Jargon Masks Meaning
The new Common Core Standards are--like all the reforms since the 1920s-- riddled with Edu-speak. Parents need to insist that their questions about their childrenís school progress are answered in plain English.

Public School and Religious Belief
Public education is like public transportation. Passengers have to go where the bus goes. Travelers who want to go where the bus doesnít go must make other arrangements.

Reading Reform Begins at Home
Parents of young children do not have the luxury of waiting for professional educators to agree on what to do about reading failure. They need to use the time from birth to age five to prepare their children for reading success.
