Quilt Blocks of the States - Nebraska

Nebraska- 12" Quilt Block

The next block in our state block series is Nebraska. This nine-patch block is made up of nine paper-pieced units. Paper-piecing foundations have been provided in PDF format.

Cutting Instructions:


(very dark)

  • Cut four 3-1/2" squares. Cut each square once diagonally for 8 triangles. (E2, E3, F2, F3, G2, G3, H2, H3)


(dark)

  • Cut four 3" squares. (A1, B1, C1, D1)
  • Cut four 3" x 5" rectangles. (E4, F4, G4, H4)
  • Cut two 3-1/2" squares. Cut each square once diagonally for 4 triangles. (I2, I3, I4, I5)


(medium)

  • Cut four 3-1/2" squares. Cut each square once diagonally for 8 triangles. (A6, A7, B6, B7, C6, C7, D6, D7)
  • Cut four 3" x 5" rectangles. (E1, F1, G1, H1)


(light)

  • Cut eight 2-1/2" squares. Cut each square once diagonally for 16 triangles. (A2-5, B2-5, C2-5, D2-5)
  • Cut two 5-1/2" squares. Cut each square once diagonally for 4 triangles. (A8, B8, C8, D8)
  • Cut one 5-1/2" square. (I-1)

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1: Print out the paper-piecing foundations by clicking here. (This is a PDF file and will require Adobe Acrobat Reader to open.) Trim around each of the 9 units about 1/8" outside of the dotted line of the seam allowance. Paper-piece each unit using a very short stitch length setting on your sewing machine. When you've finished paper-piecing each unit, trim away the excess fabric and paper by cutting along the dotted line of the seam allowance. Carefully remove the paper from the back of each unit. Step 2: Arrange the sections as shown below and sew into rows (Diagram 1). Sew the rows (Diagram 2) together to finish the block (Diagram 3) .

Your block should measure 12-1/2" on all sides. It will measure 12" finished size when it is sewn into a quilt.
