Female Riders Day

May is really all about the motorcycles because the weather is warming, more people are out and about, and the roads are busy.

In previous articles, I have written about female participation in riding and how motorcycle manufacturers are starting to take notice and woo women riders. Harley Davidson is proclaiming the month of May, as Women Riders Month. For May 1, 2009, Harley Davidson will be sponsoring two rides in the U.S. and also one “just get out and ride” if you are female. The Harley Davidson website has all the details about the rides. The planned rides are in New York City and in Milwaukee. The third ride mentioned has a ride planner button so that you can chart your own course for the 3rd International Female Ride Day.

The International Female Ride Day was organized by a female rider racer, Vicki Gray, who will go down in history not only for great racing but for starting something that is worldwide. Vicki is an innovator and leader with her own website entitled Motoress. Motoress educates, informs and provides an atmosphere of support for female riders. Her website is a good read and a good place to find out about females in the sport of motorcycling.

The purpose of the International Female Motorcycle Day is to encourage females to participate in the sport of motorcycling. Whether you own your own ride, share a ride, or rent a ride, it is all about you on the first Friday of each May. The International Female Motorcycle Day is not a planned ride, but wherever you live, hop on your motorcycle and go, go, go! Show the world how you roar on a day designated just for you.

All over the country, you will be seeing promotions and advertisements during May about Motorcycle Safety Awareness. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation, the American Motorcycle Association, and local clubs all through the country will be participating in helping vehicle drivers focus on awareness of motorcyclists. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has developed an article with detailed tips for non-motorcyclists on their site. Be sure and print it out and share with your non-rider friends.

Until next week, ride, ride, ride.
