The Importance of Rest and Relaxation

This generation is busier than any previous one. We have time saving devices and yet we rush from one thing to another without any break. Relaxation is perhaps the best thing we can do for our health and well-being. We need rest in order to reduce the stresses on our body. When we relax our body unwinds. The benefits are many:
• Decreases tension
• Increases blood flow to the muscles
• Slows the heart rate
• Reduces blood pressure

Relaxing during the day leads to:
• Increased concentration
• More energy
• Better sleep
• Less swings in emotions
• Fewer headaches

Truly relaxing is more than just sitting on the sofa watching television. While watching TV can be more relaxing than many things we do, sitting and pausing our body and mind is even more relaxing. Some television programs are more relaxing than others. Watching National Geographic, for instance, is more calming than a horror movie.

Don’t complete everything you have to do and then relax, or you will never get time for yourself. Reserve time during the day to take a break for yourself. Many know it’s important to do that, but few actually follow through. If you can, take a break outside. Even fifteen minutes can revive you and give you enough energy to continue with your day.

How to relax:
• Take a hot bath once a week
• Sit outside in the garden or park
• Sit, do nothing, meditate and let the mind wonder
• Practice yoga
• Go to bed early, sleep in occasionally
• Go for a slow walk

Relaxation is unique to you, find out the best way for yourself to relax, is it chatting with friends, walking or having an afternoon sleep? Find what works for you and schedule that into your day.
Try to relax for a while before going to bed at night. Switch off electronics and let your eyes relax before you try to fall asleep. Failing to get a good night’s sleep will affect everything you do the following day.

Vacations are the ultimate in relaxation. But make sure they are relaxing and not stressful. Don’t schedule yourself such a hectic vacation that you need a break when you get home.

The key is balance. Physical activity must be in balance with other health-promoting factors such as good food and enough sleep. When once your life has the correct balance, you will have a better quality of life.
