The series is set primarily in Tokyo, and focuses on a 12-year-old tennis prodigy named Ryoma Echizen. Ryoma is the son of a former professional tennis player named Nanjiro Echizen. In the first episode, Ryoma comes across as rather arrogant, especially when dealing with an opponent who is four years older than him.
Ryoma is part of the tennis club at the Seishun Academy (which is where he goes to school). The captain of the club is Kunimitsu Tezuka, a third year student at the school. Tezuka is very serious about everything he does, and can also be rather strict. Shuichiro Oishi is also a third year student at the academy, and he serves as the vice-captain of the school's tennis club. Shuichiro is very responsible and cares a lot about the team.
Shusuke Fuji is a third year student as Seishun Academy that is also part of the tennis club. He has tactical skill on the tennis court, and can often be seen with a calm and content expression on his face. Eiji Kikumaru is another member of the school's tennis club, and he's also a third year student. He has the sharpest vision on the team, and has an ability to see fast moving objects.
Takashi Kawamura is very gentle and shy when he's off the tennis court, but can be outspoken and stubborn when he makes a decision. But once he grabs a tennis racket and gets onto the court, Takashi becomes aggressive and loud. Sadaharu Inui is a highly intelligent player, who collects and analyzes data for players to help them determine their weaknesses.
Takeshi Momoshiro is an aggressive baseliner, but is the most open and friendly with everyone in the tennis club. Kaoru Kaido wears a bandana and is often exhaling. He is rivals with Takeshu Momoshiro.
When The Prince of Tennis aired on Cartoon Network, it was given a rating of TV-PG. Personally, I would recommend this series for anime viewers who are 12 or 13 years of age and older.
