Share and Take Turns is by Cheri J. Meiners. It is another excellent picture book in her Learning to Get Along Series. The former teacher writes paperback books which help preschool and elementary kids learn social skills.

A little girl has a problem with sharing and taking turns at school and home. She is a swing hog on the playground; she does not give her classmates a chance to swing. Cheri J. Meiners uses simple sentences to introduce the subject of sharing and taking turns. Colorful illustrations depict the situations and how a change in behavior solves the problem. Pages at the book’s end have questions and activities to reinforce the messages.

Share and Take Turns allows young children to express their feeling whether they are the swing hog or the children unable to swing. This allows insight into the swing hog’s mentality and the hurt feelings of the other kids. Children learn to listen with respect to others’ point of views. This gives preschool and elementary students an important life skill to interact with others. Share and Take Turns gives juveniles the vocabulary to express their thoughts and feelings.

When a child has an object that another wants, have the child play with it for a certain amount of time. An egg timer is a great item to count time as young children are unable to tell time. After the time is up, have the child relinquish the item with a smile. Learning to share is difficult for some kids, but a valuable lesson for a great life. Parents, caregivers and teachers will need patience. Yet, using Share and Take Turns by Cheri J. Meiners will ease the process.
