Now, back to business. Both books I read this week are available now, so let me know what you think of them. First up is "My Fair Lord" by Julie Beard (Berkley). Caroline Wainwright has a week until her twenty-fifth birthday, and if she doesn´t find herself a husband, she´ll lose her beloved home. Her last prospect just went screaming from the house in the middle of the night after an encounter with the resident ghost, and she´s beginning to think all is lost. Luckily for her, an old family friend comes to visit and finds the solution to her problem--Lucas Davin, common thief, who the good doctor believes he can transform into a perfect gentleman to fool Caro´s family so she can keep her home. Though I figured out whodunit very early and there´s a bit of purpley prose throughout, this was an engaging tale of love´s ability to transform us. Lucas has a few mysteries of his own to solve, and all loose ends are neatly tied up by the end of the story. Of Cupid´s five arrows, this one earns three.
Next up is "Daughter of Ireland" by Sonja Massie (Jove´s Irish Eyes). Moya Mahoney loves her small Irish hometown exactly as it is, even though she mourns the loss of her dearest friend. When his New York nephew Rory shows up and then plans to build a plant on the spot where the old pub stands, it throws Moya´s whole world into an uproar. I had a hard time with Rory´s attitude early on. He didn´t seem very sympathetic to me until farther into the book, when some of his problems and motivations were clearer. The problems between them were just that, problems between them, so it was very believable that way. This one earns three of Cupid´s arrows also.
