The students have mixed emotions with Hagrid being back - they like the person, but know his teaching skills leave something to be desired. At the next class, Hagrid takes them into the woods and puts down a dead cow, and calls to them.
The winged creatures that Harry saw pulling the carriage appear, and Harry is happy that he's going to learn more about them. It turns out only Neville, Harry and one other kid can see them. Hagrid explains they are Thestrals, and only people who have seen death can see them.
Umbridge shows up and deliberately goads Hagrid, then writes down poor performance reviews. Hermoine is furious.
December comes, and they have the final D.A. meeting before break. Angelina tells Harry that Ginny is taking over as seeker since he can't play. And that Ginny is actually pretty good. Neville does very well in D.A. now. Harry says that after break they might start in on Patronusses and everyone's cheerful.
Everyone leaves but Cho stays behind. She is sad that Cedric didn't know these things to defend himself from Voldemort. They realize they're under mistletoe and kiss for 1/2 hour.
Back in the common room, Hermoine has to explain to Ron and Harry why Cho is still sad about Cedric and confused about liking Harry so much even though Harry was sort of involved in Cedric's death. Hermoine then continues her letter to Viktor Krum, which upsets Ron.
Off to bed they go, and Harry has an awful dream where he - as a snake - attacks Mr. Weasley. He wakes up and tells Professor McGonagall, who then takes him to see Dumbledore.
