Abigail - Girl Name

The popular name Abigail is based on the Hebrew name Avigayil. The most common definitions I see for this name are along the lines of "my father is rejoicing," "my father is joy" and "father's joy," but other meanings have been suggested as well.

The name was rarely used during the first half of the 20th century, but it began to pick up steam mid-century. It became popular in the late 1980s, jumping into the top 100 for the first time in 1989. It reached the top 50 in 1994, and entered the top 10 in 2001.
