Starring Hilary Swank and Jonathan Pryce, this tale of pre-revolutionary France tells a true tale of an orphan woman who wishes to regain her title and family home.
Hilary Swank plays Jeanne St. Remy de Valois in the times right before Marie Antoinette's decapitation and the French Revolution. Her father was a high ranking noble who was cast out because he encouraged the rights of the poor. His daughter sought through normal means to restore her family home to her, but was denied at each turn.
Jeanne is married to the Count de la Motte (Adrien Brody), but it is not a love match. She takes up with a gigolo, Rétaux de Vilette (Simon Baker), who helps her learn the ways of the court. Jeanne pretends to be a friend of Marie's in order to gain influence to gain back her home.
Jeanne is then approached by the royal jewelers, who have created an incredible necklace that Marie Antoinette refuses to buy. The jewelers want Jeanne to use her influence to get Marie to buy it. Jeanne sees her opportunity to use the Cardinal, Marie Antoinette and the diamond necklace to redeem her family honor.
Incredible costumes and sets, and a glass of French wine in every scene. The plot drags, but the setting is sumptuous.
