Romance novels are flying off the shelves and romance ebooks are being downloaded. Do romance novels hold the secret to happy marriages? After all the most of them end happily ever after.
Living happily ever after takes a lot of work. Some of us fail, but those who do not may hold the secret to a long and happy marriage. What I have learned from those in happy marriages and from romance novels.
Happiness is not always happy every single minute of the day. Accept that there are days when things go wrong. Have faith that the up’s and down’s will eventually smooth out, however know there are times when you have to make that happen.
Respect each other’s space, mentally and physically. Allow some breathing space for your loved one. If he or she is just coming home from work, show that you are happy they are home, then allow some wind-down time. Try not to invade your honey’s personal space, that does not means not standing too close, it means “free to...”
.free to read without being interrupted,
.free to watch television without being interrupted,
.free to enjoy his or her own hobbies.
Always, be mindful that sharing a life together means giving the other person personal space.
You married your mate now accept him/her Know that you can’t change someone’s personality to suit you. There’s a scene in the film Guys and Dolls* where a conversation between a gambler and the fiancee of his gambling buddy takes place. Once more her man has disappointed her, “It's the crap game again.“ “Does it surprise you? You know Nathan.” “But he promised to change. Change!? Who do you wanna marry? Nathan or what you wanna make out of him?” “I wanna marry and live normal like people. I wanna have a normal home with wallpaper and book ends.” “Well, then, fall in love with people. Not with gamblers.” Accept a few flaws as long as you can agree on the big issues.
Make your mate feel special. Take time to let your know how you feel. Go out on dates, give unexpected small gifts for no reason, don’t be afraid to try something different.
Pay attention to your appearance. It’s not necessary to dress to impress everyday, but neatness matters. A quick shower, clean casual clothes can make a difference.
If you need a little inspiration, perhaps you can find a romance novel and share a cup of tea or a cocktail with your honey while you take turns reading to one another. Visit Romance Novels site here at BellaOnline, if you a book you like that is available for download, go ahead and buy it, I won't tell.
*Guys and Dolls, a 1955 musical film starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine. This a fun feel-good film and if you are only familiar with Mr. Brando as The Godfather you are in for a surprise and a treat. Great songs.
