Michelob Ultra Lime Cactus beer is definitely aiming towards those beer drinkers that drink Corona. Lime and cactus? Beer flavors? It has 6g carbs per 12oz serving.
Like Corona, this is a very light, easy drinking, summer beach beer. Where Corona drinkers have to find their own limes to stuff in the neck, here you get the lime flavor built in. You also get cactus thrown in for good measure.
I have to comment on the cactus here. Yes, you probably know what lime tastes like, and you do get a sharp lime flavor right when you first drink the beer. Afterwards, you get a gentle hint of something sweet-ish. Just what does a cactus taste like? Prickly? No, it's a bit melony maybe.
I looked up edible cactusses (cacti) and apparently you eat the flat, green pad of the Prickly Pear. It tastes like green bean and asparagus. I'm not getting much of a green bean flavor here. Maybe really sweet green beans, perhaps? I really think the cactus on the name here is more a marketing tool, to go for the southwest atmosphere.
Nutrition wise they did a good job here. For a 12oz serving you get only 6.0g of carbs, 107 calories, 0g of fat and 0.5g of protein. It's 4.2% alcohol.
Like with their other flavored beers, I really appreciate that Michelob has put all the nutrition information ON the container itself. You don't have to go hunting for nutrition facts on random websites. I feel that all alcohol producers should be doing this, even though the government doesn't require it right now. Hopefully more and more will start providing this valuable information to their consumers.
You should be able to find this at most of your stores, and the price is not out of line with other beers of this category. The beer comes in a CLEAR bottle, though. We have done many studies on skunking and clear bottles let a beer skunk almost immediately if it is exposed to light (any light, not just sunlight). So be sure to keep your bottles in their cardboard container and if at all possible to keep them in a dark location until you can drink them. You really get a much better flavor that way.
Well recommended for those who enjoy light beers.
