Archangel Uriel, known as the “Fire of God” is the angel who stands guard at the gates of Eden with a fiery sword, and is the sharpest sighted angel in Heaven. He is an angel of the Presence (those angels who can handle being in the “presence” of the pure Light of God). He is also considered a Seraph (one of the angels whose light is so bright, that human eyes could never tolerate their presence) and also a Cherub (the angels who reflect the wisdom of God).

Though there is no mention of Uriel in the bible, he does appear in the apocryphal texts the book of Enoch and the Second Book of Esdras.

It is believed that Uriel revealed the mysteries of Heaven to Ezra, and brought the art of alchemy and Cabala to humankind (though some credit Metatron as gifting man with Cabala).

Some say that it was Uriel who wrestled with Jacob at Peniel, and to whom he stated he would then live among men. It is also said that it was Uriel who admonished Moses for not circumcising his son. He warned Noah of the flood and led Abraham out of Ur.

Along with guarding Eden, he’s also the angel who presides over Tartarus (Hell), and it is said that on Judgment Day he will “bring forth to judgment all the sorrowful forms, yea, of the ghosts of the ancient Titans and of the giants, and all whom the flood overtook… and set before God’s seat.” ~ The Second Book of the Sibylline Oracles ~

In some ancient legends it is the Archangel Uriel (rather than Lucifer) who is the angel who tempts humankind in order that man make the choice to turn toward God. Uriel must tempt every soul on Earth, and until that task is completed, he cannot return to Heaven.

He is also known as the angel who watches over thunder and terror, the Angel of Vengeance or Retribution, a Regent of the Sun, the Prince of Lights, the Angel of Repentance, Angel of the Cataclysm, and the Angel of Prophecy.

He rules the planet Uranus. His season is winter and his month is September. His day is Saturday and his hour is the eleventh.

He is the patron saint of earth and ecology, and helps those associated with environmental issues. As an interpreter of divine truth, he also provides inspiration and insights, and will intervene in human affairs when needed.
