I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about people with Celiac disease lately and have a few friends that are dealing with it, so when I heard about Idgy’s Gluten Free Restaurant opening up in Yarmouth of Cape Cod Massachusetts, I decided to go check it out.
For anyone who is unfamiliar with what gluten intolerance is all about, it’s the inability to digestively process wheat, rye and barley products, much like how some people cannot process the lactose of foods containing milk.
You can read more about it here at celiac.com
I wasn’t sure what to expect really. I know what carbs are so I know what kinds of foods are involved with that, but gluten awareness is new to me so I wasn’t sure what types of foods would be served, or if they would taste as good as foods that have gluten in them.
I actually thought about eating “before” going to the grand opening of Idgy’s because I imagined that it might be all kinds of health foods that I am not familiar with and might not like.
I really liked the location in South Yarmouth because it had a huge amount of parking, the buildings were all attractive and the plantings around the parking lot were very nice. Idgy’s did not have a public restroom but it is in a large shopping plaza so they are available nearby.
The inside was very bright, crisp and fun. I really enjoyed the fun factor of the décor. It has the layout of a diner with the long counter and a small seating area for five round, brightly decorated tables at the entrance, but they also had a long wide bench that runs parallel, and in front of the counter. This bench seemed to bring patrons together in a more social and interactive way and we found ourselves chatting and pointing out various goodies that we could already recommend in the display case, which very conveniently, while sitting on the bench, was now at eye level.
The menu selection was pretty much like any other place that serves breakfast and lunch but with a few extra health conscious choices such as fruit smoothies, a large choice of salads and some terms I didn’t recognize like “spiru-teen” and menu headings of “immunology” which listed things like coconut water and ginger.
I was sampling the pizza, beef stew, chicken wings and oodles of various cakes, pies, breads, brownies and other goodies.
Sitting on the bench, I listened to the conversations between new patrons and the owner of the restaurant. I heard a lot of appreciation, and also some pain. One family told the story of how one member of the family would eat out at a place that offers gluten free fare and then they would all head to a regular restaurant for the rest of the family to eat because the gluten free prices at most places were much too high for the whole family to eat together. Deb, the owner, nodded and said, “That’s why our menu is 100% gluten free. We don’t have the added costs of worrying about cross contamination so we can offer gluten free dining at regular prices.”
If you are looking for a health conscious menu you will be pleased with the selection and home made ingredients used here, and if you are like me, more into the comfort foods, you’ll find plenty of those too. There’s no need to be gluten intolerant to eat here.
When you walk through the front door of Idgy’s you are greeted by a sign that simply says “Yummy”, and yummy it all is.
