MLJ Adoptions - Agency Spotlight

MLJ Adoptions has a passion for finding loving homes for orphans. Founder Michele Jackson learned about the adverse outcomes children faced when forced to grow up without families during her undergraduate studies – and she knew she needed to take action. After graduating with her law degree, she practiced adoption law and later founded MLJ Adoptions in June 2008. The result is a dedicated team whose primary objective is to serve children in need and place them into loving, nurturing families where they can thrive.

The agency, based in Indianapolis, is Hague approved and offers programs in Bulgaria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Samoa and the Ukraine. They believe their team is what makes them unique in the adoption industry. MLJ Adoptions has three attorneys on staff, with a combined 20 years of legal experience in international adoption. This enables them to successfully navigate four layers of adoption laws, including state, federal, international and the sending country. Their social services staff supports families before, during and after the adoption. And since many of the team members have grown their own families through international adoption, they are both personally and professionally committed to the cause.

Their advice for those considering international adoption is to realize that every situation is different and that there will be bumps in the road. “It’s important for prospective adoptive parents to develop methods of managing the stress of this complicated process and continue to maintain their sense of humor,” says Sheri Molnar, Accounting Manager.

In order to adopt internationally, applicants must complete paperwork, have a home study and then have a dossier compiled. Once the dossier is submitted, families must then wait for a referral. As with all adoptions, the process can be time-consuming and unpredictable. But in the end, another child will find a home and another hopeful set of parents will find their child. MLJ Adoptions has a proven track record of successful adoptions, placing approximately 175 children into loving homes each year. And that number is expected to increase.

According to Molnar, the landscape of international adoption is changing. An increasing number of older children and those with special needs are being placed, while wait times for healthy infant girls are getting longer. The agency also has a growing list of new countries that prospective parents can adopt from. But no matter which program couples choose, they can take comfort in knowing they are in good hands.

The agency’s team motto sums up their mission and the level of commitment potential adoptive families can expect: “It is our goal to find loving homes for orphans. And we truly believe in what we do!”

MLJ Adoptions works with families throughout the United States who are seeking to complete an international adoption. Domestic adoption or home study services are also available, but only for those who reside in the state of Indiana.
