How to Prepare for a Hurricane

Whether you've been through hurricanes before or this is your first one, it's always good to go through a standard checklist of precautions to make sure you don't forget something simple.

* Board Up the Windows
Depending on the strength of the hurricane, it's almost fully necessary to board up your windows. Hurricanes can fling around trees, cars, and anything else it can pull from the ground. This is most necessary with hurricanes of categories 3-5.

* Stock Up on Supplies
You want at least a week of supplies ready in two different locations of your home. You need that backup in case the first set of supplies is damaged or blown away. Those supplies should include:

* Drinking Water
* Ready to Eat Food (no cooking, no refrigeration needed)
* Band-aids and a medical kit
* Flashlights and spare batteries
* Cell phone and radio
* Blankets
* Rain gear

* Plan an Escape Route
You never know if a hurricane that seemed 'OK' will become more ferocious once it hits land. Have a bag packed and keep your radio and TV on. If the hurricane becomes stronger than you anticipated, have an idea of where you'll drive to.

* Plan for Pets, Too
Along with your own suitcase by the door, be sure to pack a bag for any pets you have, and keep them close by. You don't want to have to be chasing down a roaming cat when you are trying to get to safety.

* Err on the Side of Caution
It's easy to say that it's just another storm. But if you watch the documentaries of past hurricanes, and see what the people went through, you'll realize just how incredibly powerful nature can be. Be as prepared as you can be for it. If you choose to stay, that's fine. But if you do decide to leave, you want to be able to do so quickly and easily.
