Eggs Sardou

If you are looking for a truly delicious egg entrée to serve at your next brunch, try Eggs Sardou. Classic and elegant, Eggs Sardou was created at Antoine's Restaurant in New Orleans and named in honor of the French dramatist, Victorien Sardou. Layers of flavor and the beautiful presentation are worth the extra effort it takes to prepare this dish. In “The New Food Lover’s Companion,” by Sharon Tyler Herbst, describes Eggs Sardou as a dish consisting of poached eggs topped with artichoke hearts, ham, anchovies, truffles and hollandaise sauce and credits Antoine’s Restaurant with its creations. Like many popular dishes, Eggs Sardou has as many variations on the original as their are cooks. Most of the popular recipes omit the ham, anchovies, and truffles in favor of spinach (steamed or creamed).

Antoine’s Restaurant is the oldest family run restaurant in the country. For over 160 years, it has set the standard for elegance and service when it comes to French-Creole food. Eggs Sardou has been a favorite for generations. The restaurant has 2 floors of dining rooms and can accommodate almost any sized party. Each room’s unique ambience surely guarantees that your dining experience will be a very special one.

In the early 1960s, Oeufs Sardou was listed on the menu at Antoine’s for $1.50. Today, you will find this luscious dish for under $18. Not bad for a romantic Sunday Brunch, in a top notch restaurant, in one of the country’s most romantic cities.

Antoine's Restaurant is located at 713 Rue Saint Louis, between Bourbon and Royal streets, 5 blocks from Canal Street, in the heart of the French Quarter.

Notables:

In the movie “The Big Easy”, the very sexy, laid back Remy McSwain (Dennis Quaid) invites uptight Ann Osborne (Ellen Barkin) to meet him at Antoine’s so that she can experience night life in the Big Easy.

Francis Parkinson Keyes 1948 novel, "Dinner at Antoine's," chronicles the splendor of the restaurant.

In “A Treasury of Great Recipes,” Vincent Price, the famed actor and notable gourmet, tells of how his parents dined at Antoine’s on their honeymoon in 1894 and seventy years later, “the direct descendant of the founder served this direct descendant a gorgeous meal.”
