Benjamin Franklin is one of the Founding Fathers of United States. He was born January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. It was in Boston he learned the printing business from his brother James. James proved to be a difficult taskmaster. So, Franklin escapes his apprenticeship and runs away to Philadelphia. Benjamin Franklin flew the kite there in 1752.
Franklin was a scientist as well as a printer. He had a theory that lightning contained electricity. The scientist crafted a kite with a metal key on the string. Bravely, he flew the kite during a lightning storm on June 15. Lightning hit the key and proved his theory.
Benjamin Franklin used his discovery to invent the lightning rod. It was an iron rod with a pointed end. The rod was attached to homes and other tall structures. Lightning hits the rod, not the building. The invention protected people’s property.
Stacia Deutsch and Rhody Cohon write about Benjamin Franklin’s adventures in Ben Franklin’s Fame. In the easy reader chapter book, four modern third-graders travel to the past. There, the foursome helps a young Benjamin Franklin. The book is fun and informative for children four to eight-years-old. Enjoy the Benjamin Franklin activities.
