InfoMagic - Personal Journal Freeware

InfoMagic is a PIM or Memory Aid that uses ASCII text documents and folders to organize just about any kind of information one could imagine or need. Created for the developer's personal use it is simple, completely freeform and completely free.

Features
When first opened InfoMagic seems overly simple, but is more sophisticated then the first impression and is easy to use. Besides creating and storing documents in folders that you customize to your own needs, you can create email links, URL links, dial the telephone, sort and search for text. The folder tree is visible at all times so it is easy to move to another document. The search feature will search across all folders or only one document, displays a list of matches that can be clicked on to directly move to the matched text. There are tools for clearing a document with one click, moving to the last document viewed, inserting the date and time and protecting a document with a password. Download and installation is quick being only one 3 MB file that is self executing and only needs to be double clicked to start the set-up program.

Documentation
InfoMagic's documentation is very complete, having a ReadMe text file and Window's Help files. It took me approximately 45 minutes to read through all the information, which was concise and gives many suggestions on how to use the program. You don't need to read through the documentation to start using InfoMagic, the program is self-explanatory, but you will pick up extras that aren't quite as apparent. The InfoMagic web site has FAQs and other reviews on their product, including one that reviews other similar programs.

Possible Uses
InfoMagic would be excellent for writers, students, doctors, lab workers and anyone who needs to keep notes on an ongoing basis, and it is excellent for keeping track of personal and household information. I downloaded the program about a year ago and am still finding new ways to use it. Overall the program's performance has been very good, I've had only a few problems with it locking up my system..

A Unique Alternative
InfoMagic really does keep it simple, and flexible to your needs, even if you'd like to move your data to another program in the future. This program is a true alternative to more traditional PIMs, which require you to fit your data into someone else's idea of organized. For those of you who would like the addition of a Calendar, Appointment List and a To-Do List there is InfoMagic Extra, which can be obtained as a trial and later purchased at a low cost.
