Baby Names from Beer

Oktoberfest is upon us! Every year, at the end of September and the start of October, Munich hosts a 2+ week festival dedicated to beer -- and cities all over the world respond by holding their own mini-versions of the festival, all modeled after the original.

So... what does beer have to do with baby names? Well, certain beer-related names make very good boy names, believe it or not. No, I'm not talking "Budweiser" and "Guinness" -- I'm talking about legitimate forenames that also happen to refer to beer. For example:

Beck
The surname Beck could have any of several origins, but the most commonly accepted seems to be that it was derived from an Old Norse word meaning "stream." It's also the name of a brand of German beer (Beck's).
Usage: Rare

Brewster
Brewster began as occupational surname for a brewer (someone who brews beer).
Usage: Rare

Foster
Foster can be derived from several sources, including Old French occupational surnames meaning "saddle-tree maker," "shearer" and "forester." Foster is also the name of a brand of Australian beer (Foster's).
Usage: Moderately popular during the first half of the 20th century

Killian
The name Killian is a variant of Cillian, which is based on the Gaelic word for either "war" or "church." It's also the name of a brand of beer (Killian's Irish Red Beer) now owned by Coors.
Usage: Slightly trendy during the mid-1990s

Miller
Miller comes from an occupational surname for a mill-keeper. It's also the name of a brand of beer.
Usage: Slightly popular during the first half of the 20th century

Porter
Porter was originally an occupational surname for a doorman. It's also the name of a type of beer with a dark color.
Usage: Slightly popular during both the first half of the 20th century and the first years of the 21st (ranked #476 in 2006)

Samuel
Samuel is a Hebrew name meaning either "name of God" or "God has heard." It comprises half the name of a brand of beer (Samuel Adams) made by Boston Beer Company.
Usage: Very popular (ranked #25 in 2006)

So if you're an expectant parent with a penchant for beer (not during pregnancy, of course) a brew-inspired baby name might just be something to consider.
