This week's offering is a new pattern for a witch's hat. It's not particularly difficult to make provided you know how to make split rings - refer to my article here if you don't know how to make these.

First of all you will see from the diagram that the hat is worked in two rounds. At all times Shuttle 1 will be the shuttle working on the side pointing to the centre of the hat, Shuttle 2 will be the one pointing to the outward edge of the hat. Row 1 is indicated with dark blue rings and Row 2 with the lighter blue.

MATERIALS

• Two tatting shuttles
• Black size 20 crochet cotton - I used DMC Cebelia No. 20 but any thread would work as well
• Hook for joining

SIZE

• 6 cm wide, 5.5 cm high

PATTERN DIAGRAM CODE

• Red ring - ring worked normally, 6 DS, P, 6 DS, close ring (or joining as appropriate).
• Dark Blue ring - split ring in the inner row of the hat.
• Light blue ring - split ring in the outer row of the hat.
• Black ring - picot or joining picot (joining picots should be as small as possible).
• The numbers indicate the number of double stitches worked in the ring. Mostly it's variations of 6 DS/6 DS for the split rings but at the bottom of the hat the rings are slightly larger.

1. Wind two tatting shuttles without cutting the thread between them. You'll need around five yards of thread per shuttle.
2. Ring 1 - SH1 6 DS, tiny P, 6 DS, cl. r. Do not reverse work.
3. Ring 2, 3 and 4 - as 1^st Ring. Do not reverse work.
4. Ring 5 - SH1 R 6 DS, P, 6 DS, cl. R. Do not reverse work.
5. Ring 6 - Split Ring SH1 6 DS, SH2 3 DS, P, 3 DS. Do not reverse work.
6. Ring 7 - SH2 R 6 DS, P, 6 DS, cl. R. Reverse Work.
7. Ring 8 - Split Ring SH1 6 DS, SH2 3 DS, P, 3 DS. Reverse Work.
8. Ring 9 - Split Ring SH1 3 DS, J to corresponding P of last split ring, 3 DS, SH2 3 DS, P, 3 DS, cl. R, do not reverse work.
9. Make a lock join into the picot of the normal ring using the thread from SH1. This must be as close into the previous ring as possible.
10. Ring 10 - Split Ring SH1 6 DS, SH2 3 DS, P, 3 DS. Do not reverse work.
11. Ring 11 - SH1 R 6 DS, J to corresponding picot of the first normal ring, 6 DS, cl. R, do not reverse work.
12. Ring 12 - Split Ring SH1 6 DS, SH2 3 DS, P, 3 DS.
    
13. Make a lock join into the tiny picot of the first ring.
14. Ring 13 - Split Ring SH1 6 DS, SH2 3 DS, P, 3 DS, do not reverse work.
15. Ring 14 - Split Ring SH1 3 DS, J to corresponding free picot, 3 DS, SH2 3 DS, P, 3 DS, cl. R, do not reverse work.
16. Ring 15 - as Ring 14.
    
17. Ring 16 - as Ring 14.
18. Ring 17 and 18 - Split Ring SH1 6 DS, SH2 6 DS, cl. R, do not reverse work.
19. Ring 19 - Split Ring SH1 3 DS, P, 3 DS, SH2 6 DS, cl. R, Reverse Work.
20. Ring 20 - Shuttle 2 R 6 DS, P, 6 DS, cl. R, Reverse Work.
21. Ring 21 - Split Ring SH1 3 DS, J to free picot on adjacent R, 3 DS SH2 6 DS, cl. R, do not reverse work.
22. Ring 22 and 23 - as Rings 17 and 18.
23. Rings 24, 25 and 26 - as Rings 14, 15 and 16.
24. Ring 27 - Normal ring SH1 6 DS, J into the space between two adjacent rings on previous row, 3 DS, P, 3 DS, cl. R, do not reverse work.
25. Ring 28 - Split ring SH1 3 DS, P, 3 DS, SH2 6 DS, cl. R, Reverse Work.
26. Ring 29 - Normal ring SH2 6 DS, P, 6 DS, cl. R, Reverse Work.
27. Ring 30 - Split Ring SH1 3 DS, J to free picot on adjacent R, 3 DS, SH2 6 DS, cl. R, do not reverse work.
28. Ring 31 - Split Ring SH1 6 DS SH2 6 DS, cl. R, do not reverse work.
29. Ring 32 - Split Ring SH1 4 DS, J to free picot of adjacent R, 4 DS, SH2 8 DS, cl. R, do not reverse work.
30. Repeat ring 32 for RIngs 33, 34, 35 and 36.
31. Ring 37 - split ring SH1 3 DS, J to free P of adjacent R, 3 DS SH2 6 DS, cl. R, do not reverse work.
32. Ring 38 - Split Ring SH1 6 DS, SH2 6 DS, cl. R, do not reverse work.
33. Ring 39 - Split Ring SH1 3 DS, P, 3 DS SH2 6 DS, cl. R, Reverse Work.
34. Ring 40 - Shuttle 2 normal ring 6 DS, P, 6 DS, cl. R, Reverse Work
35. Ring 41 - Shuttle 1 normal ring 3 DS, J to free picot of adjacent R, 3 DS, J to space between two rings on the corner of the hat, 6 DS, cl. r, finish ends.
