In Welcome To Last Chance by Cathleen Armstrong, Lainie Davis decides to change her circumstances. One night, with her boyfriend passed out, Lainie grabs the keys to her car and her backpack and escapes. Planning on driving from California to Texas to stay with a friend, life hands Lainie a detour. Her car breaks down in New Mexico, ironically, in a little off-the-beaten path town named Last Chance. As the story unfolds, Lainie learns to trust--both others and God--finds love, overcomes her past, and becomes part of a community.

Armstrong develops characters that the reader is able to bond with, and is able to interject religious lessons without seeming "preachy" or "cheesy". Her romantic story lines are clean, and simple. Most unbelievable--but essential to the story line--is the willingness of a person to take in a total stranger. Not something that is believable to those living in larger cities, but maybe something to which someone from a very small town can relate. The story left me wanting to investigate the other books in the series. Worth the read.
