Today people of all ages use walking poles to aid them when walking.
I use them and find them invaluable when going up or down hills or through mud! So if you ever go walking in the countryside - they will be of use
Walking poles or trekking poles are best used in pairs. They may seem awkward to begin with - it is best to practise with them on several short walks before you use them on a longer walk. If they do feel a bit awkard to begin it is only because you are not used to them, give them a go and you will find they help you walk further and for longer..
How they work
Walking poles take some of the weight of your body from your legs and spread it onto your arms.
They also provide you with extra stability and balance.
The most important benefit is that their use reduces stress on your knees, hips, your back, legs and feet.
Walking poles help you to keep your balance when walking on uneven ground or when walking on muddy, sloping and stony paths. You can test the ground in front of you with them if you are unsure of its stability.
They can be used to push aside undergrowth such as brambles or nettles and are useful in dealing with the unwanted attentions of animals or insects
Used correctly walking poles can help your posture, breathing and stamina. They give you a more upright posture and this helps to make your breathing more efficient
Just the simple act of swinging the poles helps you keep a more steady walking rhythm - this makes you more efficient and improves your stamina i.e. you can use more upper body strength to help you along - when you need that little extra bit of oomph going uphill, or tackling a longer walk.
