These are three stages to the hair growth, hair loss, shedding process. The stages are as follows: the anagen stage, the catagen stage, and the telogen stage.
The anagen stage is the beginning stage of the hair growth cycle. Somewhere around 90% of the hair on your head is in this stage.
The catagen stage is the stage where the hair undergoes massive physical changes before it sheds less than 10% of your hair is in this stage.
The telogen stage is where the hair detaches itself from the head. A very
small percentage of the hair on your head is in this stage.
There are reasons why excessive shedding may occur. Here are a few reasons
why one may have excessive shedding.
Fever,infections, or a major case of the flu - from 1-3months after a severe illness, your hair can fall out, but will soon this process will correct itself
An overactive/underactive thyroid- an overactive or underactive thyroid can cause your hair to shed. Luckily, your physician can prescribe medication to cure this problem.
Lack of protein or bad eating habits, crash diets or malnutrition - any kind of lack of protein, or iron can cause the hair to shed (in this case by the roots).
Birth Control Pills- usually birth control pills can cause thinning hair. You can consult your doctor if this becomes and problem and switch medication.
Childbirth- sometimes after the birth of a child, your hair will shed. This tends to last a few months and eventually it corrects itself.
Ringworm of the scalp- can lead to hair shedding. If you have ringworm of the scalp, you must seek medical treatment to rid the problem.
Pulling hair- when children twist or pull their hair it can lead to abnormal hair shedding
