Sanderlings are little shorebirds with light grey feathers and a long, pointed black beak. They have black legs. In this first photo, a sanderling is on the left, two ruddy turnstones are on the right.



Sanderlings are around 8" long and are bigger than most other "peeps". They give short "kwit" calls. Young sanderlings will have white spots in tehir feathers, while a breeding sanderling will be more brown, with a brown breast and head.

Sanderlings are found on all coasts of the US as well as in certain spots scattered across the continent.
