Sugar Free Fudge Striped Shortbread Cookies

Interbake Foods has come out with a Splenda-sweetened Sugar Free Fudge Striped Shortbread Cookies set, sold through WalMart. At about $2 for 28 cookies, it's a good treat if you need a chocolate fix.

The cookies have a full chocolate bottom and stripes across the top. It is a very nice mix of the cookie base and the fudge stripes are thick enough to give flavor, but no so thick that they drown out the base cookie.

I really like the flavor of these. It's great to have one or two, nibbling them with tea or a glass of wine, and they're filling enough that you feel content after that. As with all cookies, I definitely recommend taking out ONLY the ones you are planning on eating, putting those on a plate and putting the rest back into the cupboard. The more you control and arrange your eating process, the more healthily you will end up eating.

How about the nutrition? For every 2 cookies you get:

130 calories
6g total fat
- 4.5g saturated fat
- 0g trans fats
0mg cholesterol
80mg sodium

17g carbohydrates
- 1g fiber
- 6g sugar alcohols

1g protein

So in terms of a low carb diet, you still get 10g of carbs per 2 cookies. That is not zero of course! You should not be eating entire containers of these cookies. Of course nobody on any diet should be eating entire boxes of cookies, it's not healthy for you :)

Are there problems with the cookies? Well first they have wheat flour, so anyone with wheat allergies will probably want to stay clear. Next, the cookies are made with soy, so soy allergy people, ditto.

Also of course this has 6g of sugar alcohols per serving. Most people are quite fine with sugar alcohols! They're a very common ingredient in many baked goods. However, some people get laxative effects from them. Nothing dangerous, just a little surprising :) So if you have never had products with sugar alcohols in them, try just one cookie to start with. See how it affects you. That way you can judge how frequently to eat them going forward.

So to summarize? Tasty cookie, relatively low carb count, good price.

Well recommended.
