Scream for me DVD fans. The air-raid siren himself has rounded up a really terrific three-disc set for this DVD anthology while awaiting recording the next Maiden disc due in September.
Anthology is broken down into mostly a series of live sets. Disc One has a concert from the Dive Dive Live set on the Tattooed Millionaire tour. This one is taken from a Los Angeles show, August 14, 1990. It shows Bruce right at the beginning of his solo career, full of attitude and not ready to surrender the stage to anyone. As well, there is the Skunkworks Live tour from May/June in 1996 in Spain.
Disc Two is a live set from the Chemical Wedding tour filmed in Spain in 1999. All three of these sets really avoid overlap on the others. Of course there are several songs like “Tattooed Millionaire” that appear on all three but overall there’s a good deal of variety. It’s not just three sets from different years but pretty much the same music.
Disc Three is the real treasure. First off, there are all the videos from Bruce’s catalogue from “Tattooed Millionaire” to “Abduction”. Best of all, there is about a five-minute video of Bruce explaining the video at the beginning of each one. For instance you get to see him talking about sort of ripping off The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” with the idea to have a submarine floating through each scene with Bruce peering into the different scenarios in the “Tattooed Millionaire” video.
The electronic press kit for the “Tyranny of Souls” record is included which is actually a 50-minute interview with Bruce talking about how he came to work with acclaimed producer/guitarist Roy Z. Along the way he talks about how he manages to combine his job as a pilot, fencing, his radio show and everything else along with his solo work and his work with Iron Maiden.
Rarest of all the things included on this anthology is a video from Bruce’s pre-Maiden band Samson from 1980. The music is good but the video is just hysterical as is most of any video footage from that period.
For Maiden/Dickinson fans, this is absolutely Christmas time to have all this product in one spot. For newcomers, there’s no better place to start.
