Introduction to Thai Cooking

Thai cooking is a blend of Asian and European influences
created over the centuries of trade, missionaries and diplomatic exchanges.
Originally, the main ingredients used were simply,
rice, fish, vegetables, and herbs.
Not much meat was used and when it was,
it was beef or buffalo, since these were the main animals on the farm.

Thai's would grill, bake and stew their food until the advent of Chinese cooking, which introduced other techniques.
Then the European merchants arrived and contributed their own flavor. Interestingly enough, it was the Portugese that introduced
chilies to the Thai kitchen.
Then came the Indian influence of curries and new spices.
Over the years, the Thai's have used their own ingenuity
to substitute what was on hand for hard to find ingredients
adapting it to suit their own tastes.

What is so pleasing to the palate with Thai cusine is
the harmonious blending of so many flavors to tempt your taste buds.
A traditional Thai meal consists of appetizer, salad,
soup or curry, main dish, rice and dessert.
