Ideas abound for October teachable opportunities. Whether it is a lesson on the cycle of trees and a leaf collection walk, or an art project creating a costume, the season of Autumn is full of colorful ideas. Here are plans for the remainder of the days in October, in accordance with well known and lesser known designated days:

23rd- National Mole Day- This is a day to promote an interest in Chemistry, especially among young adults and teenagers. Chemistry is sure to be a growing field that will need expertise and new recruits. The history and significance of "Mole Day" is based on the definition of a mole, and that one mole is a mass, in grams, whose number is equal to the atomic mass of the molecule. Easy enough-right? Here is how the idea of this relates to the calendar, and ideas for celebrating this interesting day:

-6:02am to 6:02pm, October 23, or 6.02 x 1023
-Drink a glass of molasses milk (201g [ 7.1 oz ] which equals 1 mole) at 6:02 in the evening.
-Drink 1 mole of H2O , or water (18 g or 0.63oz) at 6:02am.

24th- United Nations Day- Check out the children's website, titled Cyber School Bus U.N. and challenge your child to play "Flag Tag". Your homeschooler will love viewing the flags of other countries, as well as learning about their meanings.

25th- Picasso Day- Honor this legendary and classic artist by creating a project with your child using his Cubism style. Cubism and a way to depict figures in art, while stressing the geometric approach to shapes. Discuss abstract and realism with your child ,too. Picasso was an artist known for his diversity in painting and sculpture, too. The website "Artchive" has a plethora of resources you can access for this lesson. The link can be found at the end of this article. The project can be quite simple, like making a portrait in a Cubism style. It can be a collage, painting or drawing.

26th- National Clock Month- Today is a perfect day to honor this timely month by learning about or reviewing clocks. Bring out the hands on cardboard clock and ask your lower elementary student to show specific times, to the hour, minute and second. Older children will get a good review of time with elapsed time word problems. Create these problems yourself using current themes, curriculum or family happenings.

27th- National Potato Day- Honor the spud by making homemade, and healthy potato chips. Here is the recipe:

4-5 large Idaho or yellow potatoes, peeled and sliced thin
Salt to taste
Olive oil or Olive Oil Spray

Directions

Spray your baking tray with olive oil spray or brush it with olive oil. Place the potato slices evenly on the tray and bake at 425 degrees for 10-15 minutes, or until crispy. Turn them over halfway through baking. Salt as needed.

28th- Pie Day- This is a perfect day to try a new pie, or make an easy no bake pie with your child. Don't forget that using measurement skills when baking is math!

29th- Internet Day- Wow! A day to honor the superhighway of information. Let your child spend some time online if you wish today, playing educational games at sites such as Discovery Kids or PBS Kids.

30th- National Candy Corn Day- Have fun with your homeschooler and make a cute
candy corn paper craft while snacking on these sweet treats. The link for this craft can be found at the end of this article.

31st- Boo!- Happy Halloween! Enjoy a festive day with your child, either attending Halloween parties and events, or a fall festival. You deserve a day off!
