Layering in This Classic Shag Hair Style

Today’s hair can be almost any style. One very popular choice is the classic shag hair style. Extensive layering and texturizing allows for fullness toward the top of the style and soft layers that frame the face and lay close to the neck. This is often a very good hair style for a woman who is over thirty, or forty or beyond. The fullness toward the top draws the eye upward toward the eyes. The layers toward the bottom soften the chin line and neck area – a good camouflage for lines and wrinkles.

The woman in this picture is wearing a good representation of the classic long shag hair style. The model has fine hair but she has lots of it. Her hair is very thick, making it possible to create many layers without taking away from the thickness at the bottom. It is layered enough to bring the style in closer at the bottom without causing it to appear thin.

To style the long shag:

Natural waves
Blow dry this style with a round brush to allow for waves and movement in the hair, creating a natural appearing wavy texture. The lower area of the style can be rolled under with a round brush or allowed to remain straight and hug the body as is shown in the picture. Apply a small amount of hair cream to control the waves and settle fly-aways.

Fluffy
Blow dry the style with a round brush toward the face. Add large curls with a large round curling iron. Fluff the hair and arrange the curls with your fingers and spray with flexible hold hair spray.

Straight
Blow dry the style with a vent brush or paddle brush for a trendier straight look. Use a flat iron to further remove curl. Keep the ends perfectly straight or allow them to flip out softly. Finish the look by applying a light weight pomade to separate the layers. Put a small amount on your finger tips, rub your hands together to emulsify, and fun your fingers through your hair. Follow the lines of the cut with your fingers to accentuate the shape of the cut.

Hair Color
Hair color plays an important role in the appearance of a shag hair style. Highlighting – the addition of one or two lighter shades of color – can effectively show off the many layers in the style. The deeper shades add depth while lighter shades add sparkle. Keep the lighter highlights toward the top of the style for a more youthful and natural look.
