The eyewitness account of operation redwing and the lost heroes of Seal Team 10
by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson
NAVY SEALS are born for war. Once hatched from eggs into little Navy Tadpoles and throughout their training and growth to become Navy Seals, they eat, breath, sleep and live for war. Just ask Marcus Luttrell...he knows...
Lone Survivor chronicles a mission in which Marcus and his team of three fellow Navy Seals are compromised. In the wilds of Afghanistan, he and his boys are playing sneak and peek, when they are stumbled upon by a couple of goat herders. (Sound familiar to anyone? Read BRAVO TWO-ZERO)
Questioning the legalities of "dispatching" the "civilians", mulling over the rules of engagement, knowing the goat herders are unfriendly, but unarmed, the Seals feel compelled to let them go. The team knows full well that their reconnaissance mission is compromised. They know they may have signed their own death warrants when the civilians tell the UN-friendlies they've been watching.
What follows is a harrowing tale of combat. Outnumbered with no commo, the Seal Team is attacked by a bad-guy force superior in numbers. Can you say Taliban? Wave after wave of enemy attack the team and the Seals give them absolute hell.
But numbers don't lie, and a small Navy Seal Team without fire support can only do so much against over 100 enemy combatants.
You'll have to read the book to get the rest. The title really explains it well, but the real surprise is how Luttrell survives. You'll be highly impressed by the heroics exhibited by some unlikely allies, and you'll be introduced to the Afghan custom of "Lokhai".
An act of incredible unselfishness by the team leader brings a helicopter with a reaction force. More sacrifice of the highest order is made, and Luttrell is forced to escape and evade (while continuing to make the Taliban pay for their pursuit).
This book will make you proud. This book will make you wonder. This book will make you cry.
I'm just glad that these guys are on Team America's side...
THANK YOU to Marcus Luttrell and his brothers in arms for their courage and sacrifice. For those who made the ultimate sacrifice may you rest in peace.
