The book is written in several chapters that each covers a type of bird - owls, purple martins, cardinals, etc. In each case it talks about what that bird is like, and then relates it to the author's experiences in life, love, and spirituality. She reflects on her trying to cut down on criticizing her husband, on wanting desperately to have a child, on her lessons growing up and the value of friendship. She is able to relate how the birds handle their lives to the tasks we face as adults in a modern world - and how God ties into all of this.
This isn't a heavy-handed, sermonizing lecture. It is soft and gentle, combining the soft whisper of wings with a keen eye for what is really important in life.
