1915- The U.S. Coast Guard is created.

1986 - The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after lift off.

Alan Alda, the star of the TV hit “M*A*S*H”, “The West Wing” and the film “The Aviator”, was born in 1936.

Mikhail Baryshnikov, the renowned Russian dancer and actor, was born in 1948.

John Banner, the actor who is best known as Sergeant Schultz on TV’s “Hogan’s Heroes” was born in 1910.

Nick Carter, musician and member of the boy band “The Backstreet Boys” was born in 1980.

Daunte Culpepper, NFL quarterback, was born in 1977.

Joey Fatone, a member of the boy band ‘NSync was born in 1977.

Sarah McLachlan, the songstress behind “Adia” and “Angel” was born in 1968.

Sam Phillips, the voice behind such hits as “I Need Love”, was born in 1962.

Jackson Pollock, the famed painter, was born in 1912.

Arthur Rubinstein, the famed Polish pianist, was born in 1887.

Henry Morton Stanley, the famed explorer who uttered the words “Dr. Livingston, I presume”, when meeting David Livingston in Africa, was born in 1841.

Elijah Wood, the accomplished actor who appeared in “The Lord of the Rings” movies and “Sin City” was born in 1981.

We Said Goodbye To…

John Banner, who was born this day in 1910, passed away at the age of 63 in 1973.

Charlemagne, one of the earlier rulers who defined Western Europe, passed away at the age of 72 in the year 814.

Sir Francis Drake, the explorer who became the first person to sail the world, passed away in 1596 at the age of 54.

King Henry VIII, the renowned ruler of England who was known for his tumultuous marriages and as the father of Elizabeth I, passed away at the age of 55 in 1547.

Greg Jarvis, Christa McAuliffe, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Francis R. Scobee and Michael J. Smith, the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger, were killed in 1986 when the shuttle exploded shortly after launching. Jarvis was 41, McAuliffe was 37, McNair was 35, Onizuka was 39, Resnik was 36, Scobee was 46 and Smith was 40 at the time of the tragedy.

Astrid Lindgren, the author and creator of Pippi Longstocking, passed away in 2002 at the age of 94.

Peter the Great, considered one of the greatest rulers of Russia, passed away in 1725 at the age of 52.

Jerry Siegel, writer and one of the creators of Superman, passed away at the age of 81 in 1996.

William Yeats, prolific Irish author and Nobel Prize recipient for Literature passed away in 1939 at the age of 73.

Musical Moments In…

1965 - The legendary rock band The Who made their first ever TV appearance on Britain’s “Ready, Steady, Go”.

1985 - The song recorded to help battle poverty in Africa was recorded this day. “We Are The World” featured such megastars as Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick , Stevie Wonder and more.

TV Moments In…

1973 - “Barnaby Jones” starring Buddy Ebsen and Lee Meriwether debuted on CBS. The drama about the private investigator would last for seven years.

1978 - “Fantasy Island” starring Ricardo Montalban and Herve Villechaize debuted on ABC. The show, which told of guests traveling to a mysterious island where one of their dreams would become reality, would stay on the air for six years.

1813 - Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice” is first published.
