Feelings : Story and Activities

Feelings are a part of us. Part of guiding children is helping them deal with their feelings of hurt and anger.

It is important for children to develop healthy attitudes toward their feelings and learn to deal with them in ways that will develop a positive self-image and relationships with others.

Pre-Story Activity
Materials--Faces that express various feelings (i.e., happiness, anger, sadness, scared, etc.)
Discussion--We all have different feelings. Sometimes feelings can lead us to do good things, and other times to do wrong things.
Activity--

It is all right to have different kinds of feelings. We like feeling happy, but sometimes feel angry or sad. It's not all right to do mean things because we are angry. We may not hurt ourselves or others because of the way we feel. This is wrong and hurts the feelings of the other person.

Story
Angelina and Alice, by Katharine Holabird and Helen Craig (Illustrator)
From Publishers Weekly
Angelina meets a new friend in Angelina and Alice by Katharine Holabird, illus. by Helen Craig. After a grand beginning, the friends go through a bumpy patch when Alice sides with some older kids who mock Angelina's handstand abilities. Luckily, Alice comes through in the end. Craig's illustrations are as winsome as ever as she chronicles the heroine's emotional roller-coaster ride.

Other Books
A Bargain for Frances, by Russell Hoban and Lillian Hoban (Illustrator)
Frances and Thelma are friends -- most of the time. Thelma always seems to get Frances into trouble. When she tricks Frances into buying her tea set, it's the last straw. Can Frances show her that it's better to lose a bargain than lose a friend?

Best Friends, by Miriam Cohen and Lillian Hoban (Illustrator)
At the beginning of the day, Jim and Paul are almost best friends -- and after a series of mix-ups, almost enemies! Then, together, they see an emergency in the classroom, and they band together to set it right...like the best friends they really are.
