Tolkien used ravens and crows as spies and messengers in his Lord of the Rings and Hobbit books.

Red Bellied Woodpecker
The Red Bellied Woodpecker, Melanerpes carolinus, is a very shy bird, coming occasionally to suet feeders if it feels safe. It is a large, solitary bird, about the size of a flicker, a bit smaller than a blue jay.

Rhode Island Red Chicken
Although itīs not a wild bird, the state bird of Rhode Island is the Rhode Island Red Chicken.

Ring Necked Pheasant
The ring necked pheasant is the state bird for South Dakota, but it isnīt a native US bird.

Robin, American
The American Robin is often the first bird a youngster can recognize. Instead of hiding in trees, it strides along lawns, hunting for worms. Its blue eggs are often used in nest illustrations. It has a warbling song it sings, when it is feeling musical.

Robin, European
Britain chose the European Robin Erithacus rubecula as their national bird in the 1960s. The bird is lovely, has a beautiful singing voice, and is very protective over its territory.

Rose-Breasted Grosbeak
The Rose-Breasted Grosbeak hangs out in pairs and has a lovely color combination. The female is a quiet brown and white, while the male has a brilliant red chest.

Roseate Spoonbill
The Roseate Spoonbill is well loved by birders for its gorgeous pink feathers and its funny spoon-shaped beak.

Ruby Throated Hummingbird
The Ruby Throated Hummingbird is a beautiful little bird, common across the eastern coast of the US. Come see some recent photos of a female!

Ruddy Turnstone
The Ruddy Turnstone is a shorebird found along the coasts of the US as well as in particular spots within the center of the continent. It has a white breast and brown wings.

Ruffed Grouse
The Ruffed Grouse - NOT the Ruffled Grouse - is the state bird of Pennsylvania. This bird can be found across the US and Canada.

Rufous-Sided Towhee
The Rufous-sided towhee is for many a summer bird, arriving in mid to late April and leaving in the fall. It is robin-sized, and is often noticed because of the flurry of leaves it causes when it hops in them. This is its way of digging up insects and other small critters.
