Website Templates -- How To Use Them

It may be that if you are new to web design, your HTML skills might leave you feeling like you are woefully unprepared. While HTML itself is not considered to be an especially hard programming language to learn, for some, it can be mystifying, not to mention frustrating when you code something and it doesn’t come out looking the way you want it to.

It could also be that you simply don’t have the time to design a webpage from scratch. it might be surprising to know that quite a few webpages out there are the result of templates that have been tweaked and modified, and that the person who uploaded it to their domain might not have designed the webpage you are looking at.

Just as such programs as Microsoft Office allow you to download preset templates for your own use for a variety of things such as shipping labels to brochures, so can you make use of website templates designed by others, of which you would only be required to copy and paste the code into the correct field or upload the file itself to the server and have a beautiful webpage show up on your domain.

Templates can be acquired from many sources, some of them even free. However, as with most things, if you want something original or extra high end, you can expect to pay for it. In some cases, web masters even make use of such services as Elance to hire a freelance HTML coder for their website who will design something customized. Many hosting services such as yahoo and Wordpress also provide simple templates that can be used but the HTML-impaired web designer.

Most people making use of templates heavily customize them for their own use, rather than simply uploading them. if you are planning to open an online store, you might make use of a store template, but change the image files to the products you are selling, or the introduction or header to your specific message or page name. Given this, making the full use of templates will usually require the user to have some working knowledge of HTML, if only to be able to properly edit it.

Templates can be downloaded via a zipped file, which will require them to be extracted. In Windows machines, this is accomplished by right clicking on the file and selecting “Extract to” to a certain destination you will remember. The HTML files can be opened with Notepad, a program included in Windows systems, and edited, then re-saved as an HTML file. When doing this, make sure that all you change is the information within the HTML code, not the HTML tags themselves, which can mess up the page. It is always wise to extract tow copies of the file, one to keep as a master file in case you mess up the working file terribly and need to start over. The second copy can be the file you are working on.

Making use of templates is quite the time saver for those with little time to design a website from the ground up and for those with weak HTML skills. Website templates can make it easy for anyone to have their own webpage, regardless of skill.
