How often have you been driving along and read a message on a sign along the side of the road. It may lift your spirits with a chuckle or give you some needed inspiration. Sometimes it contains a bit of wisdom that gives you something to think about on the rest of the journey.
Now there is a book that makes it possible to take all of those great church sign sayings home with me. The Great American Book of Church Signs is the photographic record of Donald Seitz’s journey across the country. He and his family drove 20,000 miles and photographed 100 church signs for this book.
I love church signs. I rarely drive by one without making an effort to read it. Sometimes a message on a church sign is just what I needed to hear. It is the bit of wisdom that gets me out of the doldrums and sets me down the road with the right attitude. I have often seen a message that I was determined to remember until I got home so I could relate it to my husband, only to forget it by the time I arrived. How disappointing.
This book contains all of the messages that I have seen on church signs and more.
It’s a nice table top book to pick up and read a quick page or two. When I first received the book I got caught up in reading the whole thing at one sitting. It is addictive. One short and sweet message leads to the next. I found that this method was very tiring. These messages are meant to stand alone, so I warn my visitors to take the book in small doses.
The pages are of heavy grade glossy paper that will hold up through lots of readings. The photography is well done with clear color photographs that also give a peak of the surrounding area – the church, landscaping or homes in the background of the sign.
One of my favorites is from Paint Lick, Kentucky. It reads, “You Think It’s Hot Here.” I love to peak at local culture. In this photo, there is a house in the background with cows in the front yard.
Another from Nashville, Tennessee says “God Wants Full Custody, Not Just a Weekend Visit.”
And another; from Auburn, Kentucky, “Practice Makes Perfect. Be Careful What You Practice.”
