The main character of Battle Angel Alita is Alita (her name is Gally in the original Japanese version), and she is an amnesiac cyborg. At the beginning of the OVA series, her intact head and upper torso are found by Daisuke Ido when he's out looking for useful scrap. Ido discovers that she is in a state of suspended animation. He revives Alita in his laboratory, and discovers that she has lost her memory. Ido ends up naming the cyborg Alita.
The series is set in a futuristic city called Scrapyard, which is built around a massive scrap heap that rains down from Zalem, a mysterious city floating up in the sky above Scrapyard. The people who live in Scrapyard have no access to Zalem, and must find a way to make a living in the violent world of a city that is more like a wasteland. Alita finds out that Ido has been working as a Hunter-Warrior, which is a mercenary who kills cyborg criminals and collects the bounties. Alita follows Ido when he goes after one of his targets, and she discovers that she has fighting abilities that she didn't realize that she possessed. Alita ends up joining the Hunter-Warriors. During the OVA, Alita also becomes friends with an orphaned teenage boy named Yugo, who makes his living doing odd jobs around Scrapyard. Also introduced in the OVA is Chiren, a former partner of Ido's when they were in Zalem.
Battle Angel Alita has an interesting story to tell, and it utilizes some wonderful animation in its visuals. However, the OVA series is a bit violent (there are shots of blood as people are killed), and there is also some shots that include nudity. This is an OVA anime series that is definitely not being targeted to a younger audience. Personally, I would recommend the Battle Angel Alita OVA series to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
