Putting the Mended Heart Blocks Together

Cutting and Reassembling the Mended Heart Quilt Blocks

Mended Hearts Quilt Block Cutting ApartStack two blocks together, with hearts facing in the same direction. Make sure edges are even. Hold blocks together firmly to keep them from moving and use scissors to cut across BOTH blocks at the same time. You can cut a straight or curved line, depending on your preference.

Mended Hearts Quilt Block Piecing togetherSwitch pieces so that the top of one block matches the bottom of the other block. The edges of the applique will not always match, but that is part of the charm of this block.

Mended Hearts Quilt Block sew back togetherTake your pieced blocks back to your sewing machine and using a wide zig-zag, stitch the butted edges together, making sure the zig-zag stitch catches both sides of the block.

Using a square ruler and your rotary cutter, square the edges of the block so that your block is 8 1/2 inches square. Now you have two finished Mended Heart blocks!

Project ideas

As I mentioned in the beginning, you can use these blocks in a number of ways. I plan to use bias tape to cover the raw edges and make small wall hangings to give to friends. Another fun thing to do is to find a square picture frame and mount the block inside the frame. If you make a block for each holiday, you can easily swap out the block as the seasons change.

If you are interested in piecing the blocks together, you will need to use narrow sashing strips (or bias tape) on both the front and back to cover the raw edges and stabilize the blocks.
