Jyu-Oh-Sei

Jyu-Oh-Sei is an anime based on the manga series by Natsumi Itsuki.

The series takes place in the Balkan star system, and it has been 350 years since humans first settled in the system. This star system is located about 150 light years from Earth, and many of the planets have been "terraformed" in order to resemble Earth. The series starts out on the space colony Juno, where 11-year-old twins Thor and Rai find that their parents have been murdered. The assassins kidnap the twins and send them away from the station in a space capsule.

When the twins awaken, they find they are on Chimaera, a secret planet that's used as a penal colony. The plants on Chimaera are the dominant lifeform on the planet, and there are many carnivorous ones. Also, day and night last for 181 days each, and the planet has extreme weather conditions. The prisoners on the planet have established a feudal society that has been divided into four groups that are called "Rings." The Rings are based on skin color. The twins encounter a group of kids that have no affiliation to any ring, and this group is led by a boy named Zagi.

Thor is the main character of Jyu-Oh-Sei. He is able to adapt quickly to Chimaera's environment, but still has several near-death experiences. Rai is his twin brother, but he is weaker than Thor; Rai dies early on in the series. Zagi, meanwhile, is a pragmatic person. Over the course of the episodes, other characters and elements are introduced, and secrets are revealed.

This series has a theme of surviving, especially the concept of "survival of the fittest." Thor must also try to make the best out of this bad situation that he has found himself in. When it comes to the animation, it's rather well-done. However, it should be mentioned that near the end of the first episode, Thor is shown using a laser blade and killing some people. I would definitely not recommend Jyu-Oh-Sei to younger viewers. FUNimation gave this series a TV-14 rating, but I would personally, recommend Jyu-Oh-Sei to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
