Grammy Winners Announced

The winners for the 52nd Grammy Awards are in and it looks like BeBe and CeCe Winans should sing reunited and it feels so good because the duo won Best Gospel Performance and Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album respectively.

Other winners of the night for the Gospel and Christian Music scene were; Kirk Whalum and Jerry Peters for Best Gospel Song “It’s What I Do” from Whalum’s The Gospel According to Jazz III, Switchfoot-Best Rock or Rap Album-“Hello Hurricane”, Israel Houghton –Best Contemporary/Pop Gospel Album-“Love God, Love People”, Diamond Rio for Best Southern, Country, or Blue Grass Album-“The Reason” and Patty Griffin for Best Traditional Gospel Album-“Downtown Church.”

I’m sure many people are wondering why they didn’t see these starts receiving their awards on the show. Well that is because the Gospel and Christian music awards are never shown on the show. They are given out during a pre-show that does not air on CBS. This is one of my biggest pet peeves with the Grammys. I mean they could at least air one award on the show live…at least one.

Ok I digress…now this was the night of upsets on the secular side. White House favorite but otherwise unknown jazz artist Esperanza Spaulding beat out the pop sensation and 3-D movie kid Justin Bieber for Best New Artist. The 26-year old Spaulding accepted the award with an elegant speech thanking her teachers no less…imagine that!

Although he was nominated for 10 Grammys, Eminem won only two awards-Best Solo Rap Performance and Best Rap Album for “Recovery.”

The little band that could Arcade Fire picked up Album of the Year honors for their project “The Suburbs” and Song of the year went to Lady Antebellum for “Need You Now.”

My favorite performance of the night would have to be the Aretha Franklin tribute at the top of the show.

The show posted the highest ratings since 2001 with an average audience of 26.5 million viewers, up 3 percent from last year's telecast, and marked increases across key demographics, according to preliminary ratings results from Nielsen.
