Human Rights and the Internet

The internet is an incredible resource for many things, and human rights advocates have found many ways to use the power of the internet to do great things. Here are five easy ways to use the internet in your human rights advocacy:

Keep up with current events

Staying updated with the news is a simple way to get involved in activism to start out. There are many excellent blogs, news outlets, and other resources to help you keep up with the latest news. Some human rights organizations, like Amnesty International, even have newsletters that you can sign up for that can help you stay up-to-date on important issues.

Educate yourself

There’s a wealth of information online about various human rights issues and it’s important to become conversant in basic topics in human rights. There are many websites dedicated to educating others about these topics, and it’s well worth your time to learn about these issues.

Share information

Sharing good information with friends and family is one of the best ways you can change the world. Whether it’s through email, social media, or your own blog, teaching others about what’s going on in the world around them is so important in human rights activism. I know that I wouldn’t know much today about human rights if it weren’t for those who shared information and their own ideas.

Become part of a community

There are lots of online communities striving to make a difference, and it can be very empowering to feel connected to others who are united in common goals and values. There’s power in supporting and lifting each other as you find ways to solve problems and lift others as well. Social media is a great place to look for human rights advocacy groups, as well as official human rights organizations.

Create a space where you share your ideas

Find a way to tell the world what you think about important human rights issues; people will listen. You could blog, use Facebook, Tweet, Pin interesting things on Pinterest, create art; whatever you feel conveys a compelling message. When we share our voices, it causes a reaction in people, and that’s a good thing. We need people to think about these issues.

We can use the internet as a force for so much good. Let’s find ways to educate ourselves and others about human rights issues so we can make our world a better place.
