Do You Text?

Do You Text?

Text Messaging and SMS are virtually the same. SMS stands for ‘short summary service’ and has become known as texting. In the US it is estimated that 93% of all phones (known as a dungeon phone) have the ability to send/receive text messages. In addition, these phones are turned on at all times. Most might not answer a call at all hours of the day or night but all phones receive text messages as they come in. They are waiting for you when you wake up or get out of the movie theater ready to be read. Since they are only 140 characters, they are quickly read and responded to.

Now consider how text marketing can benefit you and businesses alike. Text marketing is not like email or fax marketing, which can be very intrusive. With text marketing the consumer has the ability to choose which messages or promotions they would like to see by a feature called ‘opt-in’ and those they do not wish to see by a feature called ‘opt-out’.

The most popular ‘opt-in’ feature uses what is called a short code coupled with a key word(s). A short code is a 6-digit number used as the phone number and the key word(s) identify the promotion you are requesting information for. It’s quite simple. It’s free. It’s powerful.

While browsing I found this great mobile APP for a business card. It is actually an individual APP in the form of a business card. When you order the m-CARD you receive an opening screen where you can display your business card then take the consumer to four different screens that highlights a short bio, product info, social networking, notes, and more. It’s creative and effective because it also incorporates text campaigns that help you get the word out. Here’s how the short code + key word works for this business card ~ they are offering it at 60% OFF the list price for the next week so it will be worth it to at least check out how the short code works!

TEXT the following words: Code Card
This goes where the message is usually place. Two words separated by a space and NOTHING else.
TO the following short code: 46786
This number goes where the phone number usually is placed
HIT SEND

Once you hit send, your message goes to the server. A response text message will be returned with a link to the offer or promotion. It is that simple!

Just for fun I have listed below some text message averages per month according to the New York Times/Technology.
* Teens = 2779 messages per month
* 18-24 = 1,299 messages per month
* 25-34 = 529 messages per month
* 35-44 = 441 messages per month
* 45-54 = 234 messages per month
* 55-64 = 80 messages per month
* 65 + = 32 messages per month
These numbers have been very consistent over the last year. Just a thought ~ I began texting more because I can actually talk to my nephews whenever I want AND THEY ACTUALLY TALK BACK! So I encourage the ‘older’ texters to text more because it is a great way to stay in touch.
