Prince William and Kate Middleton got engaged at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya in October 2010. The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is located in northeast Kenya near Mount Kenya and is 65,000 acres. It is home for ten percent of the black rhinoceroses in Kenya. LCW also boasts of having the largest Grevy's Zebra population in the world. This is Kenya's most successful wildlife conservancy.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy was started in 1995 by David and Delia Craig. They dedicated their entire ranch in Kenya to the conservation of the black rhino. Previous to the founding of Lewa, the Craigs along with Anna Merz, began to round up every black rhino in Kenya and relocate them to their ranch. The population of the black rhino has dropped dangerously low to less than 300 rhinos.
You can now find 440 species of birds and more than 70 different mammals at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Because of the efforts at Lewa, black rhinos are being reintroduced into the areas they used to inhabit.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy greatly restricts the number of visitors each year. This is to keep the park as pristine as possible so visitors can get the truest sense of the wilderness of Africa and it's animals. The conservancy works hard to maintain populations of rare black and white rhinoceroses. While visting you will also have a good opportunity to see Grevy's zebra, elephant, giraffe, eland, oryx, buffalo, lion and leopard.
There are many places you can stay at Lewa to view the wildlife:
Lewa House - This property can host up to 12 people. There is a lovely view across the plains of Northern Kenya. Amenities include a large swimming pool overlooking a watering hole, cottages with a double room and twin room, en-suite bathrooms and private verandas.
Lewa Safari Camp - This property is set against a magnificent view of Mount Kenya and the Northern Frontier District. There are twelve permanent luxury tents each with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, and flush toilets.
There is a main lounge area where meals are served and guests can chat and relax near the cozy fireplace.
Wilderness Trails - Wilderness Trails is located in the eastern corner of the conservancy. Sixteen guests can stay in eight cottages featuring fireplaces and verandas.
From here, guests can ride horses, play tennis, participate in day and night game drives, bush walks, camel rides, hike with a Maasai warrior, visit the ancient archaeological site, visit a traditional Maasai boma, and more.
Sirikoi Camp - This is a game lodge located in the center of Lewa and offers helicopter trips, lion tracking, horseback riding, and visits to a local Maasai boma.
Sirikoi offers four luxury tented rooms with access to the veranda, a living area with a fireplace and an elegant bathroom with a Victorian bath and a shower.
