The Killing of Osama Bin Laden

History has been made this past week as Americans celebrate in the streets over the death of Osama Bin Laden. There are so many twists and angles to this story and while I hope to convey the facts behind it all, I know that it is a story that will continue to unfold in the coming days.

After nearly 10 years of trying to hunt Osama down, when many thought it would never happen, he was finally located. Why did it take this long? Why wasnít he found under the leadership of Clinton and Bush?

It is a question worth considering but of course, no answer can really satisfy. We are too hung up on the fact that it finally did happen. As a nation we showed resilience and patience as we waited this day out.

I would guess that many, especially those who were personally affected by the tragedies on 9/11 feel a sense of relief, a sense of justice. Finally, the one responsible for so many American deaths (and other deaths even beyond 9/11) is no longer able to carry out his evil ways.

President Obama cannot take the credit for the capturing and killing of Osama but he can take the credit for the method he ordered. It was risky and could have killed him politically. But it worked out and I think he just might have sealed his re-election. I could be wrong but I will tell you one thing, this definitely hasnít hurt him.

He chose a wise course of action in that we would have the assurance of Osamaís death. A bombing would have prevented 100% knowledge that he had actually been killed. Here there was no question that a bullet to the head would confirm his death.

Obama was also wise to not disclose their plan to the Pakistanis. Clearly there are a lot of unanswered questions here as to what they knew about Osamaís whereabouts, if they knew.

But some are questioning what happened next, the burial of his body at sea. The administration claims it was to follow Muslim practices in that a body has to be buried within 24 hours. But it was also to prevent a shrine being built. Because of uncertainty about whether he is really dead, despite DNA evidence, White House administration is considering releasing photos to prove it.

So far all we have seen is apparently the bloody bedroom that Osama was killed in. I donít really know that I want to see his body. I believe he was killed and I believe they dumped his body in the sea. Buried? Thatís just a nice way of saying what was really done, they dumped him.

While we would like to think that the killing of Osama closes a chapter, it really doesnít. First, what does this mean in our relationship with Pakistan? Is it really possible that they didnít know Osama was living there? I highly doubt it. I think itís time to cut ties and to stop giving them money. While some have been bringing up all the positives to having a relationship with Pakistan, I just find it very hard to believe that they werenít behind him.

Next weekís article will look more in depth into our relationship with Pakistan.

The second issue is retaliation. While we are celebrating in our streets, we should also be very aware that the chances of retaliation are extremely high. We must be prepared.

And the third issue is what does this mean to our forces being in Afghanistan. Democrats and some Republicans are calling for our troops to be pulled out.

As the days unfold and more information becomes available, the story will likely get more interesting. But for now we can rest assured that the worldís most wanted man is finally gone.
