| When I first started learning how to program iOS applications, Xcode 3 had been published for awhile and Xcode 4 had just been released. Of course, I wanted to use the newest version of Xcode but even the latest books were still supporting Xcode 3. I tried to use Xcode 4 while working through those books but it just caused too many problems.|
So I installed Xcode 3 and decided to upgrade to Xcode 4 after I learned iOS programming. That's why I am explaining how to install Xcode 3 in this article, for those readers that might need to use this version. I am assuming that you do not have a version of Xcode install already.
Your first step is to register as an Apple Developer. This is different from Applying to the Apple Developer Program. Registration is free. Applying to the program costs $99 per year and takes some time to get approved. Luckily you can work on your iPad app projects up to the point of testing on a real iPad device without being approved into the program. When you get to the point where you need to test on a real iPad device, you will need a certificate for this and you can only get that after being accepted into the Developer Program.
Now that you have registered, you can enter the Member Center area. There you will find resources to get you started, including a download link for Xcode. From the Members screen, you will see an iOS link under the Dev Centers section. On the iOS Dev Center page, you will see a Downloads link which will take you further down the page. Click on the Xcode 3.2.6 and iOS SDK 4.3 link.
After you download Xcode 3.2.6 and the iOS SDK 4.3, click on the dmg file to open the file. You will have two files inside. Click on the Xcode and iOS SDK.mpkg file to start the Xcode and iOS SDK Installer. Accept all the defaults. The installer takes a few minutes and then you will get the "Installation was successful" message. You can close the installer window and remove the Xcode and iOS SDK icon from your desktop.
