Flash Storybook - Invisible Start Button

Open your Flash storybook project into FlashR CS5.5. We have created the ornament's animation that starts when the application loads. Now we need to give the user a way to open the book.

This user interaction for our app will be a touch event that will enlarge, rotate and then open the book. All of this will be triggered by the touch event when the user taps on the book. Our next task is to create another invisible button that will overlay the book area.

  1. You should already have an actions layer at the top of the Timeline and a buttons layer under that. We already have our invisible ornButton button added to the buttons layer.

  2. On Frame 1 of the Buttons layer, we already have a Keyframe. From the Menubar, click Insert - New Symbol. Set the Type to Button and name the button startButton.

  3. Flash will display the button's Timeline with the four button states - Up, Over, Down and Hit. Add a Keyframe to the Hit frame. On the Hit frame, draw a rectangle the size of the book but omitting the corner of the book that overlaps the ornButton area. (670 pixels by 520 pixels). As before, the rectangle can be any color because it will be invisible on the main Timeline as indicated by the semi-transparent color overlay.

  4. Return to the main timeline and Frame 1 of the Buttons layer. Drag an instance of the startButton onto the stage and position it over the book. Do not overlay the two buttons. We don't want this button to interfere with the other button.

  5. In the Properties panel, give the button an instance name of "startButton".

Now we are ready to create the animation that will open the book.
