Hobbies in the Summer

Summer is upon us! This is the season of activity and traditionally of carefree fun. As adults though, we rarely get to be free of work and responsibilities over the summer months anymore and so it’s easy to let this carefree season flow right past us.

Here is one way you can grab hold of the energy of this season and welcome it into your life, no matter how busy you find yourself.

Cultivate an outdoor hobby.
For those of us that like being indoors, this may at first be daunting. There are all types of hobbies that can be done outdoors however for every skill and activity level.

Gardening is one of my favorites. This weekend in fact, I am going to get all my porch containers repotted and growing yummy herbs, vegetables, and beautiful flowers. Tending to each of these pots every summer is a great joy for me. Even if you’ve missed the planting season like I have, buying baby plants will make up your time. Gardening in pots is easy work also and so you won’t find yourself too exhausted but you will be able to enjoy the good weather.

If you are a treadmill exerciser, why not get out on a trail or in your neighborhood since the weather is warm enough instead of opting for the machine. There are a lot of benefits to this. There are studies, for instance, that show being outdoors contributes to a more beneficial overall workout. You’ll sweat more which will release more toxins and work your muscles harder and your mood will probably benefit too. Just being outside around nature and other people will surely cause you to be a bit happier. Plus the focus on the fun part of it as opposed to the exercise part of it will make a huge impact in how much you enjoy your workout as well.

Do you like to paint or draw? Why not take your tools outside and have fun with drawing inspiration from the natural environment. If you are a photographer, challenge yourself to take a month’s worth of nature pictures. If you are a crafter, see if on a non-windy day you can create your jewely, knitting, or crochet wares on a park bench or table in your yard instead of having to stay in the house. There are many ways to incorporate your interest with the outdoors.

Try one of these simple suggestions today and see your good mood grow. Even in these small ways, you’ll be taking time during these summer months to enjoy them like you used to when you were young!
